IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING EMAIL BROADCASTS
Brothers and Sisters,
Over the past several weeks, the State Lodge has been forwarding to you, information from the Grand Lodge. These broadcasts do not necessarily reflect the views of the FOP of Virginia, but as members of the Order, I feel it very important to share with each of you, these broadcasts. Regarding the most recent broadcast requesting the presence of members at an event in Washington - historically, these events are not announced until 24 to 36 hours in advance. This is NOT the fault of the FOP, but rather the timing of the event itself with reference to the dignitary in attendance and possible scheduling conflicts. In other words, as soon as WE know, YOU know, regarding any request for members at meetings. As the political season continues to heat up, I ask that each of you take notice of any broadcasts that may be send from the state lodge. These broadcasts clearly state that they originate from the Grand Lodge, which we are happy to share with our members. How you 'handle' this information is decided by you, the members. Many of you have shown a marked concern regarding the content of the broadcasts. I respect your point of view, but ask that you continue to monitor these broadcasts and continue to share your perspective of the issues that we face. STATEMENT REGARDING THE 'JOBS' BILL
Brothers and Sisters,
On this past Monday, September 12th, your state lodge was informed of a conference call to be held with members of the leadership of the FOP and Vice President Joe Biden. Both of us called in and joined in this conference call. Because of the lack of timely notice, only 12 others in the FOP leadership across the nation, were listening. We were very disappointed when the call first started because we were told that it would not be a true interactive conference call, but instead it was a one way conversation, listening to the Vice President read a prepared script. We were NOT afforded any opportunity to ask questions, nor make any comments. As many of you know, soon after this call, our Grand Lodge FOP issued a release of opinion and a call to action, asking members to call their elected officials, voicing support for the JOBS bill. No states were contacted, no National Trustees were polled and no notice of this political stand was discussed before this call to action was sent out. We are not judging the decision of our Grand Lodge, but instead would ask that NO position regarding this measure be taken until the full text of the measure can be read and reviewed by those in the decision making process. As of today, September 14, the bill has not been introduced, nor scored by the Congressional Budget Office regarding cost or funding. As law enforcement professions and members of the FOP, it is of course, your right to voice your opinion to your elected officials. The FOP of Virginia State Lodge will not take a formal position stance on this measure until all the facts are known. The State Lodge has received emails from members regarding this issue and the call to action - it is for this reason that we wanted to share with each of you the facts that we have them up to now. We welcome all comments from you, the members. We know that in the end, after all the facts are learned, each of you will make a well thought out decision of how you feel about this important measure.
